THE TRUTH ON OTHER LANDFILLS IN
New Zealand
MORE OF THE SHOCKING TRUTH IN PICTURES!.
The opinion of the P.B.B.U.A. is that if you went and took photo/video evidence afterhours of any landfill in New Zealand you be likely to find abuse of the management plan for that landfill eg. uncovered rubbish etc. basically a Dump not a landfill operated according to its management plan under which a landfill is given resource consent.
Look at this photo of Bonny glen landfill, Palmerston North a claimed 'state of the art' landfill, run by Waste Management N.Z. and Envirowaste (the same partners in Transwaste Canterbury who will operate Kate Valley) taken July 2002.

Notice the 'state of the art' capping device (cover) or lack of it completely. Thus landfill gas escapes to the environment and leachate can be produced. Obviously operators/owners of landfills get resource consent and say they will cover rubbish, put no hazardous wastes into landfill etc. as according to there management plan but in reality this never happens and there is no one that apparently enforces this. However we recently learned that Wastemanagement N.Z. was being fined $1000 by Auckland Regional Council for each odour complaint made by residents near the claimed 'state of the art' Redvale landfill in Auckland.
More disturbing is the environment court information used in the Hampton Downs (A proposed Landfill) case we obtained from Lorena Collett who lived 440 metres from the 'state of the art' Redvale landfill in Auckland run by Waste Management (a partner in Transwaste Canterbury). click here to see the SHOCKING full document in pdf format.
In 1999 Lorena Collett paid for her own testing of landfill gas contaminants after years of dealing with offensive odour from the landfill. What was extremely alarming was the detection of highly toxic and carcinogenic 33 types PCB congeners and 23 types dioxin/furan congeners in the ambient air 20 metres from her back door! This was from a landfill that was claimed to be a 'secure facility' and had no hazardous wastes dumped there.
In paragraph 42 of lorena's environment court document it reads:
One resident has told me they were reluctant to complain about odour problems for the fear that publicity would result in a devaluation Dairy Flat properties in general and their property in particular.
P.B.B.U.A. suspects some Burwood residents have the same fear.
But according to Waste Management NZ's paid consultants they STATED at the Hampton Downs case and Kate Valley hearings that; there is no affect on property values around the Redvale Landfill! See the truth by Valuations N.Z. report on properties values around Redvale landfill. In the last ten years no one else except Waste Management NZ has purchased properties around Redvale Landfill. The recorded sales by Waste Management NZ have been classed by Valuations NZ as needing inspection!
These photos October 2002 taken of the Envirowaste operated Landfill in Dunedin

P.B.B.U.A. and associates will continue to seek the truth of
the state of landfills in New Zealand and we will keep you informed! If you have
images of landfills being mismanaged please send them to us and we will post
them here thanks email them here
