LATEST NEWS:
TRANSWASTE TO APPEAL CONDITIONS OF RESOURCE CONSENT 20TH MAY 2003
KATE VALLEY RESOURCE CONSENT GRANTED with conditions 17TH APRIL 2003
TO DATE:
So far $20,000,000 dollars Has been spent on the proposed Regional Landfill and a landfill hasnt been built yet. Redvale a "state of the art' landfill (see more about redvale here) on which Kate Valley is based, was stated to cost $16 million dollars to build by the time rubbish started being dumped in Redvale $43 million dollars had been spent. It is going to cost millions of dollars just to do excavation of Kate valley to get a liner in, put gas collection pipes, leachate pipes etc. before any rubbish goes in. Considering Kate Valley is a first of its kind in NewZealand where rubbish is going to be dumped at the bottom of the valley then gradually built up the valley. And if you have looked at the kate valley area and the surrounding area you would notice a large amount of landslides (see the photos here). However the applicant Transwaste has assured us that Kate valley is environmentally secure P.B.B.U.A. believes Kate valley is not secure and common sense tells us that its going to be an awful job to excavate kate valley into use for a landfill.
Another interesting point is that under the conditions set by commisioners Remnant A must be protected see more of remnant A here. Therefore it makes the Kate Valley proposal even more Financially doomed as they have a third less area to dump rubbish into.
By 2008 all green wastes dumped to landfill must be nil so there goes 48% of the waste stream therefore the landfill is even more uneconomical and non-viable.
Also P.B.B.U.A. has approximated that it will cost $12,000,000 dollars a year in trucking costs (diesel fuel, road user charges etc.) to just get the waste up to Kate valley. That money could be better spent on fixing Burwood landfill and the surrounding environment.
